Les Demoiselles d'Avignon

Abstract and Modernist Paintings

Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, originally titled The Brothel of Avignon, is a large 1907 oil painting by the Spanish artist Pablo Picasso depicting five nude women in a brothel on a street in Barcelona. Rendered with angular, disjointed bodies that draw on tribal art while abandoning Renaissance perspective, the confrontational figures broke sharply with earlier Western painting; the art historian John Richardson called the work pivotal in Western painting since Giotto. Measuring about 243.9 by 233.7 centimetres, it is held by the Museum of Modern Art in New York and is generally regarded as having laid the foundation for the development of Cubism.
