Soft Construction with Boiled Beans (Premonition of Civil War)

Abstract and Modernist Paintings

Soft Construction with Boiled Beans (Premonition of Civil War) is a 1936 painting by the Spanish surrealist artist Salvador Dalí. Dalí created the work, which shows a grotesque, self-strangling human form built from distended limbs, to represent the horrors of the Spanish Civil War, painting it only about six months before the conflict actually began. He later claimed the painting as evidence that his subconscious mind had prophetic power, though some historians have suggested he may have altered the title after the war started to strengthen that claim.
