Charlotte Perriand (1903 to 1999) was a French architect and designer whose work aimed to create functional living spaces on the belief that better design helps build a better society. She preferred to spend time absorbing the atmosphere of a place before beginning to design for it, valuing direct, unmediated contact with a site's own character. In her 1981 essay L'Art de Vivre she wrote that the art of dwelling extends into the art of living in harmony with a person's deepest drives and with the environment they inhabit or create.
