Antonio Frasconi was a Uruguayan American visual artist who lived from 1919 to 2013 and is best known for his woodcuts. Born in Montevideo, he moved to the United States in 1945 and worked there for the rest of his career, becoming a Guggenheim Fellow in 1952, receiving a Caldecott Honor in 1959 for the children's book The House That Jack Built, and winning a Horn Book Fanfare award in 1962, the same year he became an associate member of the National Academy of Design. His portfolio includes Twelve Fables of Aesop of 1954, multilingual picture books such as See and Say of 1955, and later, between 1981 and 1986, Los Desaparecidos, a series addressing the victims of Uruguay's military dictatorship. Influenced by artists such as Paul Gauguin, Frasconi specialized in woodcut printmaking throughout his career and also taught as Distinguished Teaching Professor of Visual Arts at the State University of New York at Purchase from 1982.
