Gian Lorenzo Bernini was an Italian sculptor and architect who, more than any other artist, defined the visual character of Baroque Rome. His sculptures, including The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa and Apollo and Daphne, are celebrated for capturing a single dramatic instant with theatrical intensity, dynamic movement, and virtuoso carving of marble to suggest flesh, drapery, and even breath. As papal architect for much of his career, he also designed the colonnade of St. Peter's Square and numerous fountains and church interiors across Rome, integrating sculpture, architecture, and light into unified theatrical ensembles that became the model for Baroque art across Europe.
