Andrea Mantegna

Painters

Andrea Mantegna was an Italian Renaissance painter who lived from about 1431 to 1506, a student of Roman archaeology and son-in-law of fellow painter Jacopo Bellini. He experimented with perspective, including lowering the horizon line to give his compositions a sense of greater monumentality, and his landscapes and figures show a fundamentally sculptural approach to painting. He also led a workshop in Venice that was the leading producer of prints in the city before 1500.
