Sally Mann

Photographers

Sally Mann is an American photographer known for large format black and white photography exploring family, mortality, and the landscape of the American South. Her 1992 collection Immediate Family, made up of intimate pictures of her own young children on the family farm in Virginia, drew both acclaim and controversy for its unguarded depiction of childhood. She later turned to landscape photography using antique cameras and processes such as wet plate collodion, producing haunting images of Civil War battlefields and Southern terrain that continue her long preoccupation with decay, memory and death. Mann's technical command of historic photographic processes alongside her willingness to confront difficult, personal subject matter has made her one of the most significant American photographers of her generation.
