Andrea della Robbia was an Italian Renaissance sculptor, especially in ceramics, who lived from 20 October 1435 to 4 August 1525. Born in Florence, he was the son of Marco della Robbia and became the pupil of his uncle Luca della Robbia, who popularised glazed terracotta for sculpture. He carried on the production of enamelled reliefs on a much larger scale than his uncle and extended their use to friezes, lavabos, fountains and large retables. One of his most remarkable works is the series of reliefs of babies in swaddling on the front of the foundling hospital in Florence, and he also made many reliefs of the Madonna and Child.
