Playwrights of the classical stage of Japan, including Noh drama and the puppet theatre. A playwright belongs here when the cited article names Noh or puppet theatre. It excludes Chinese and Western dramatists. Noh is a slow, masked form of song and dance drama, and the puppet theatre of jōruri, later called bunraku, tells stories with chanted narration and large puppets, and both traditions continue to be performed in Japan today.
