Lucas Vorsterman the Elder, who lived from 1595 to 1675, was a Baroque engraver born in Zaltbommel. Around 1618 he joined the workshop of Peter Paul Rubens, and from 1619 to 1621 he was Rubens sole engraver, reproducing notable paintings with dedications added by Rubens. A violent dispute in 1621, probably about the authorial rights to the prints, ended their working relationship. In 1624 he went to England and survived on royal patronage, working with the artists Rubens and Anthony van Dyck and for patrons such as the Earl of Arundel and Charles I of England.
