Maso di Banco

Painters

Maso di Banco was an Italian painter of the fourteenth century who worked in Florence, working from about 1335 to 1350. He and Taddeo Gaddi were the most prominent Florentine pupils of Giotto di Bondone, exploring the three dimensional dramatic realism that Giotto inaugurated. His name and work are known from Lorenzo Ghiberti autobiographical Commentari, which identifies the frescoes in the chapel of the Holy Confessors at Santa Croce in Florence as his chief work. The frescoes, unsigned and undated but probably of about 1340, show scenes from the life of Pope Sylvester I, the Last Judgment and the Entombment.
