Rufino Tamayo was a Mexican painter who developed a distinctive modernist style that drew on pre-Columbian art and Mexican folk traditions while deliberately avoiding the overt political and historical narrative content favored by the leading Mexican muralists of his generation. Working in rich, earthy color palettes influenced partly by ancient Mexican pottery and textiles, he produced paintings of figures, animals, and still lifes that emphasized formal and coloristic values over explicit social commentary, a stance that put him at odds with Rivera, Orozco, and Siqueiros during his lifetime. Tamayo divided his career between Mexico, New York, and Paris, and is now recognized as one of the major twentieth-century Mexican painters alongside the muralists he distanced himself from.
