Singers and musicians of reggae, the Jamaican popular style that grew out of ska and rocksteady in the late 1960s, with its offbeat rhythm, bass-led grooves and lyrics of faith, protest and daily life. A performer belongs here when the cited article calls the person a reggae singer or pioneer. It excludes performers of other Caribbean and African styles, who sit in their own groups. Its pioneers carried the sound abroad through recordings and world tours, and its songs of faith, freedom and social struggle reached audiences far beyond Jamaica.
