Félix Vallotton

Printmakers, Calligraphers and Graphic Artists

Felix Edouard Vallotton was a Swiss and French painter and printmaker who lived from 1865 to 1925, associated with the group of artists known as Les Nabis and an important figure in the development of the modern woodcut. He painted portraits, landscapes, nudes and still lifes in an unemotional, realistic style, developing a simpler manner during his association with Les Nabis in the 1890s and producing woodcuts characterized by broad masses of black and white with minimal detail, including a series of ten interiors titled Intimités that portray charged domestic encounters between men and women. He produced few prints after 1901 and concentrated instead on painting, later work that included highly finished portraits, nudes and landscapes painted from memory.
