Giacomo del Pò

Painters

Giacomo del Pò (1654-1726) was an Italian Baroque painter and engraver born in Palermo and trained by his father Pietro del Pò, who became one of the most influential painters working in Naples in the early eighteenth century alongside Francesco Solimena and Paolo de Matteis. His style was noted for its expressive, anti-classical qualities, vivid color and dynamic compositions influenced by Genoese painting, and he was especially prized for decorative ceiling frescoes in Neapolitan palaces. He also produced what are considered the earliest Italian painted illustrations of Milton's Paradise Lost, and his late allegorical canvases for Vienna Upper Belvedere, painted around 1722, influenced other Central European painters of the following generation. In contrast to Solimena's powerful chiaroscuro and de Matteis's limp classicism, he offered an expressive, anti-classical style characterized by streaming filaments of deeply saturated colour, shimmering light effects and sweeping compositional movements that bear a strong affinity to the Genoese works of Gregorio De Ferrari; del Pò may have known of these through drawings and engravings.
