Helmut Newton was a German born photographer who became one of the most influential figures in fashion photography of the twentieth century. Fleeing Nazi Germany as a young man, he eventually settled in France, where his work for Vogue and other major fashion publications became known for its provocative, highly staged black and white images blending eroticism, glamour and a cool, cinematic sense of menace. His recurring subjects, powerful and often nude women photographed in luxurious settings, made him a defining and controversial figure in how fashion photography portrayed female power and desire. Newton's influence is credited across fashion, advertising and fine art photography long after his death.
