Hendrick Goltzius was a German-born Dutch printmaker, draftsman and painter who lived from 1558 to 1617. He has been described as the leading Dutch engraver of the early Baroque period, or Northern Mannerism, praised for his technical mastery and the exuberance of his compositions. Born near Viersen in the Duchy of Julich, he received his first training from his father, a glass painter, and learned engraving from Dirck Volckertszoon Coornhert. In 1577 he moved with Coornhert to Haarlem in the Dutch Republic, where he stayed for the rest of his life, and in the middle of his life he also began to paint.
