Elizabeth Catlett was an American and Mexican sculptor and graphic artist who lived from 1915 to 2012, best known for depicting the Black American experience in the twentieth century, often focused on the female experience. A 1946 fellowship allowed her to travel to Mexico City, where she settled, worked for two decades with the Taller de Gráfica Popular print collective, and eventually became head of the sculpture department at the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas; her work blends abstract and figurative Modernist styles with African and Mexican influences in the tradition of social realism.
