Maria Martinez

Maria Martinez was a potter of San Ildefonso Pueblo in New Mexico who, together with her husband Julian Martinez, revived and perfected a distinctive black on black pottery technique in the early twentieth century. Their process produced vessels with a matte black design set against a polished, glossy black surface, achieved through a careful firing method that drew on Ancestral Puebloan pottery shards found near their community. Martinez's work brought international recognition and demand for Pueblo pottery, and she deliberately shared her techniques with other potters at San Ildefonso rather than keeping them secret, helping to build a lasting economic and artistic tradition for her community. Her pottery is held in major museum collections and is widely credited with elevating Pueblo ceramics from a craft object into a recognized fine art form.
