Toshiko Takaezu

Ceramic, Glass and Metal Artists

Toshiko Takaezu (1922 to 2011) was an American ceramic artist, painter, sculptor, textile artist and educator of Japanese descent from Hawaii, whose body of work spanned ceramics, weavings, bronzes and paintings. She is known for rounded, closed ceramic forms that broke from the tradition of clay as a medium for functional objects, exploring its potential for aesthetic expression by applying Abstract Expressionist concepts, and she is recognized as one of the ceramic artists of the 1950s and 1960s who moved the practice of ceramics beyond a commercial trade into a form of artistic expression.
