The Potala Palace is a museum complex in Lhasa, the capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, formerly the winter palace of the Dalai Lamas and their residence from 1649 until 1959. Rising in tiers up a hillside, its massive fortress-like walls and gilded roofs make it one of the most recognized works of Tibetan architecture.
