Artists whose primary practice is composing music, writing original works for performance whether orchestral, operatic, chamber, or solo, across the classical and art-music tradition from the Baroque era through the twentieth century. Belongs here: symphonists, opera composers, and composers of chamber, choral, and solo instrumental music whose work is written down as a score for others, or themselves, to perform. Does not belong here: performers and vocalists whose primary practice is performance or improvisation rather than composition, who are grouped under Performing Musicians and Vocalists, and dramatists who write for the stage in words rather than music, who are grouped under Dramatists and Playwrights.
