Pillar of Fire is a thirty-minute dramatic ballet choreographed in the 1940s by Antony Tudor to Arnold Schoenberg composition Verklarte Nacht, Op. 4. The music was inspired by a nineteenth-century German poem set in a time when a child born out of wedlock was not condoned in polite society, and the ballet dramatizes a pregnant woman who fears her fiance will not marry her, only for him to accept the pregnancy and tell her the child will be considered his.
