Works of modern dance, the twentieth century stage art that broke from the rules of classical ballet, in which choreographers made new works to commissioned scores and to spirituals and folk songs. The group includes the American ballet by Martha Graham to the music of Aaron Copland and the best-known work of the choreographer Alvin Ailey, both of which are still performed by their companies. Modern dance works are often created for a company and passed on from dancer to dancer.
