World and Traditional Dancers

Dancers and choreographers who carry or renew dance traditions outside the Western ballet and modern dance stage, among them the Royal Ballet of Cambodia, Argentine tango, African dance and the dance of the Japanese geisha and theatre. Their work shows how a regional dance became a stage art and, in some cases, an international school or a national symbol. The group includes dancers who founded dance schools, led national companies, danced for royalty or toured the world, and who each stand for a living tradition of their own country.
