Film directors of Britain, English filmmakers who shaped the thriller, the large scale epic and the quality drama of British cinema in the twentieth century. The group includes the maker of Psycho and Vertigo, who moved to Hollywood after a long career in England, and the maker of Brief Encounter, The Bridge on the River Kwai and Lawrence of Arabia. Between them they show the range of English filmmaking, from suspense and wit to large-scale historical spectacle, and both were knighted for their services to film.
