Film directors of Denmark and Sweden, who made the Nordic countries a center of serious cinema, from the silent era to the postwar art film. Their films are known for close attention to faces, faith, doubt and silence. The group includes the Danish director of The Passion of Joan of Arc and Ordet and the Swedish director of The Seventh Seal, Persona and Fanny and Alexander. Their work has been studied and borrowed by filmmakers in many countries, and their best films are shown at film festivals and in repertory cinemas around the world.
