Billy Wilder was an Austrian-born American filmmaker and screenwriter who lived from 1906 to 2002, one of Hollywood's most celebrated writer-directors of the mid-twentieth century. He worked across film noir, with Double Indemnity in 1944, biting comedy, with Some Like It Hot in 1959, and drama, with Sunset Boulevard in 1950 and The Apartment in 1960, the latter winning the Academy Award for Best Picture. He fled Europe after the rise of the Nazi regime and built his American career largely in collaboration with fellow screenwriter I.A.L. Diamond, winning multiple Academy Awards for both writing and directing.
