David Lean was an English film director who lived from 1908 to 1991, known for large-scale epic filmmaking, including The Bridge on the River Kwai in 1957 and Lawrence of Arabia in 1962, both of which won the Academy Award for Best Picture and earned him the Academy Award for Best Director. He began his career as a film editor in the British film industry before turning to directing in the 1940s, and also directed Doctor Zhivago in 1965.
