April Love (painting)

Genre Scenes

April Love is an oil on canvas painting from 1855 to 1856 by the Pre-Raphaelite painter Arthur Hughes, measuring about 89 by 50 centimetres and held today at Tate Britain in London. It shows a young couple in a moment of emotional turmoil, the man barely visible as he bends over the hand of the woman while she looks down at fallen blossoms, a scene of quiet heartbreak rather than a specific historical or sacred story. Hughes accompanied the painting at its first exhibition, at the Royal Academy in 1856, with lines from the Tennyson poem The Miller's Daughter on the ache of remembered love, and the female model, Tryphena Ford, married Hughes that same year. The work was first owned by the designer William Morris before entering the Tate collection in 1909.
