The Burial of the Sardine

Genre Scenes

The Burial of the Sardine, known in Spanish as El entierro de la sardina, is an oil-on-panel painting by the Spanish artist Francisco Goya, usually dated to around 1812 to 1819 and held in the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid. It depicts a three day carnival celebration culminating in the ceremonial burial of a sardine, showing masked revelers dancing toward the Manzanares river beneath a darkly grinning figure representing the King of the Carnival. The painting is considered a transitional work in Goya's career, bridging the more colorful manner of his earlier paintings and the psychologically darker style of his later work.
