Luncheon of the Boating Party

Genre Scenes

Luncheon of the Boating Party is an 1880 to 1881 painting by the French Impressionist Pierre-Auguste Renoir, exhibited at the Seventh Impressionist Exhibition in 1882, where it was identified as the best painting in the show by three critics. It was purchased from the artist by the dealer-patron Paul Durand-Ruel and bought in 1923 for 125,000 dollars from his son by the industrialist Duncan Phillips, who had spent a decade in pursuit of the work; it is now held in The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., and is noted for its richness of form, fluidity of brush stroke and flickering light.
