Nighthawks (Hopper)

Genre Scenes

Nighthawks is a 1942 oil-on-canvas painting by the American artist Edward Hopper, portraying four people in a downtown diner late at night as seen through the diner's large glass window, with the light from inside illuminating an otherwise deserted urban street. Classified as part of the American Realism movement, it was sold within months of completion to the Art Institute of Chicago, where it remains, for 3,000 dollars. It is widely described as Hopper's best-known work and one of the most recognizable paintings in American art.
