Salem is an 1908 painting by the English artist Sydney Curnow Vosper depicting a congregation gathered inside Capel Salem, a Baptist chapel in the village of Pentre Gwynfryn in Gwynedd, Wales. The painting shows an elderly woman in traditional Welsh dress, complete with a tall black hat and shawl, walking down the chapel aisle past seated worshippers, a scene of quiet rural piety that became widely reproduced and beloved in Wales during the twentieth century. The painting is also associated with a long-running local legend that a devil face can be seen hidden within the folds of the woman shawl, a claim never substantiated but one that has added to the painting popular fame.
