The Beaneater

The Beaneater is an oil on canvas painting made around 1583 to 1584 by the Italian Baroque painter Annibale Carracci, held in the Palazzo Colonna gallery in Rome. It shows a peasant eating white beans from a bowl with a wooden spoon at a table set with onions, bread, a vegetable pie, wine and a striped earthenware jug. The painting combines a still life of food with an intimate portrait-like study of an ordinary laborer, an approach that was unusual for Italian painting of its period.
