The Black Brunswicker

The Black Brunswicker is an 1860 oil on canvas painting by the English artist John Everett Millais, showing a soldier of the Black Brunswickers, a German volunteer corps of the Napoleonic Wars, as he prepares to leave for battle while the young woman beside him tries to hold the door shut against his leaving. The scene is set on the eve of the Battle of Quatre Bras in 1815, tied by tradition to the Duchess of Richmond ball held in Brussels the night before, and it plays the black uniform of the soldier against the pale satin dress of the woman for dramatic contrast, with a dog wearing a red ribbon looking on. The painting measures about 104 by 68.5 centimetres and is held at the Lady Lever Art Gallery in Port Sunlight, Merseyside.
