The Slave Market (Boulanger)

The Slave Market is an 1886 oil on canvas painting by the French academic painter Gustave Boulanger, first exhibited at the Paris Salon that year under the title Un Maquignon d'esclaves a Rome (A Slave Dealer in Rome). It depicts an ancient Roman slave auction, showing seven young people, ranging from children to young adults, presented for sale. Boulanger specialized in classical and Orientalist genre scenes, and the painting is often compared with, and sometimes confused for, similar slave-market subjects by his contemporary Jean-Leon Gerome.
