Leisure and Entertainment Scenes

Genre paintings depicting people at play or at rest: dancing, a card game, a garden party, a day at the races or the beach, a circus or athletic spectacle, a theatrical or musical performance, or an outing taken purely for pleasure. This group gathers scenes whose subject is voluntary recreation rather than paid work or the routine business of running a household, spanning the Impressionist circle's own favorite subjects through much earlier festive and pastoral scenes of the same kind. It excludes a scene set specifically in a tavern or cafe, gathered under its own group, and excludes an ordinary domestic activity performed at home, gathered under Domestic and Household Scenes.
