Pornocrates

Pornocrates, also called La Dame au Cochon, is an 1878 work by the Belgian artist Felicien Rops, made in gouache and watercolor heightened with pastel on paper. It shows a blindfolded woman, nude apart from stockings and gloves, leading a pig on a leash while cherub like figures representing the arts lie discarded at her feet. The image is read as a satirical allegory of a materialistic, pleasure driven society and is considered the best known work by Rops. It measures about 75 by 48 centimetres, is held at the Musee provincial Felicien Rops in Namur, Belgium, and caused public controversy when it was exhibited in 1886.
