The Mild Mild West

The Mild Mild West is a large mural painted in 1999 by the British street artist Banksy on the side of a building at 80 Stokes Croft in Bristol, England. It shows a teddy bear about to throw a Molotov cocktail at three riot police, made in response to a series of police raids on unlicensed warehouse parties in Bristol during the 1990s, including a clash with revellers at a New Year gathering on Winterstoke Road in 1997 and 1998. Painted over three days in full public view, the mural has since become a well known symbol of the countercultural identity of the city and of local resistance to policing and commercial redevelopment of the neighbourhood.
