The Cardsharps

The Cardsharps is an oil on canvas painting by Caravaggio, made around 1596 to 1597 and now held at the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas. It depicts a well dressed but naive youth playing cards with a second boy who hides extra cards in his belt while an older accomplice looks over the victim shoulder and signals what to play. A dagger tucked at the cheat side hints at the danger beneath the seemingly casual street scene. The painting marks an important early milestone in Caravaggio career, made soon after he left his master workshop to work independently, and its detailed, theatrical realism was influential enough that more than fifty painted copies and variations by other artists survive.
