The Lacemaker (Vermeer)

The Lacemaker is a small oil on canvas painting from about 1669 to 1670 by the Dutch Golden Age master Johannes Vermeer, now in the Louvre in Paris. It shows a young woman in a yellow bodice bent in concentration over her lacework, bobbins held in one hand as she guides a pin into the pillow that holds her lace. Vermeer set the figure against a plain background, removing distraction so that attention falls entirely on her hands and the meticulous craft they perform. At roughly 24.5 by 21 centimetres it is the smallest of Vermeer's known paintings and is regarded by some scholars as one of his most experimental compositions.
