Scenes of everyday life, love and story painted by the Pre-Raphaelites, the English artists of the middle of the nineteenth century who turned to bright colour, close detail and sincere feeling in reaction to the academic painting of their time. The group includes quiet cemetery and romantic scenes by John Everett Millais, Arthur Hughes and their circle, painted from nature and from literature. The pictures are known for their glowing colour and the care with which each plant, costume and face is painted.
