L'Enseigne de Gersaint

Genre Scenes

L'Enseigne de Gersaint is an oil on canvas painting by the French painter Jean-Antoine Watteau, completed in 1720 to 1721 as a shop sign for the art dealer Edme Francois Gersaint, and is considered the last major work Watteau completed before his death. It depicts staff and clients inside the shop, including a worker packing a portrait of Louis XIV, a young couple at the shop entrance, and customers examining artworks on display. It measures about 163 by 308 centimeters, functioned more as an advertisement for the artist himself than for the dealer, and never actually served as an exterior shop sign for more than about fifteen days. It is held at Charlottenburg Palace in Berlin. This description is adapted from Wikipedia contributors under CC BY-SA 4.0; changes were made. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/
