Tavern and Cafe Scenes

Genre paintings set inside or immediately outside a tavern, inn, cafe or other public drinking and eating establishment, depicting patrons drinking, eating, conversing or being served. This group gathers a recurring genre subject from the Dutch Golden Age through nineteenth century French cafe culture, distinguished from an ordinary domestic meal at home, gathered under Domestic and Household Scenes, and from a public market or street scene with no drinking establishment as its setting, gathered under Street and Urban Life.
