Woman at a Window

Woman at a Window is an 1822 oil on canvas painting by the German Romantic artist Caspar David Friedrich, held at the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin. It shows an interior view of a woman, modeled on the artist's wife Caroline, seen from behind as she looks out of an open window toward ship masts on the Elbe River. The scene is set in Friedrich's own Dresden studio, and the composition uses his characteristic Ruckenfigur device, a figure viewed from behind, to draw the viewer into the woman's contemplative gaze toward the world beyond the room.
