The Painting of the Six Kings is a fresco created by an unknown Umayyad painter around 710 to 750 CE at Qasr Amra, a desert castle and UNESCO World Heritage Site about eighty five kilometres east of Amman, Jordan. It depicts six rulers standing in two rows of three, four of them identified by Arabic and Greek inscriptions as the Byzantine emperor, King Roderic of Spain, the Sasanian emperor and the King of Aksum, while the identities of the remaining two are uncertain and have been variously proposed as a Chinese emperor, a Turkic leader or an Indian ruler. The fresco survives today badly damaged, in part from an attempt by the early twentieth century explorer Alois Musil to remove it, and a fragment bearing labels and partial crowns is now held in the Museum of Islamic Art in Berlin.
