The Death of General Wolfe is an oil painting completed in 1770 by the Anglo American artist Benjamin West, commemorating the 1759 Battle of Quebec, where General James Wolfe died at the moment of victory. The painting broke a standard convention of historical portraiture by showing figures who had not actually been present at the scene dressed in modern rather than classical costume, and it became one of the best known images in eighteenth century art.
