An 1875 oil painting by the French Impressionist Gustave Caillebotte, showing three shirtless workers on their knees scraping the wooden floor of what is believed to be the artist's own studio in Paris. Caillebotte combines an academic precision of drawing and modeling with an Impressionist eye for natural light and a distinctly modern, urban working-class subject, rare in painting of the period. The Paris Salon of 1875 rejected the painting as too vulgar a subject, and Caillebotte instead showed it at the second Impressionist exhibition in 1876, where critics compared him to Courbet and Manet.
