Gustave Moreau was a French painter born in Paris in 1826 and died there in 1898, remembered by many historians, including Jean Cassou, as the Symbolist painter par excellence. His jewelled, dreamlike treatments of mythological and biblical subjects made him an influential forerunner of Symbolism in French painting from the 1860s onward.
